Polytechnic Student Pavilion

The openness of the site is most emphasized by its expansive landscape and lack of sound; only a few crickets, birds, and the occasional airplane make their presence known. The density is represented by the site’s trajectory from an open landscape to a military base, and now ASU’s Polytechnic campus. Therefore, this student pavilion mitigates the contrast between the existing sweeping regional landscape and the projected urban growth of the Polytechnic campus.

This was a group project for a Student Pavilion on one of ASU's campuses. We were immediately drawn to the peacefulness of the site and began by exploring the contrast between the current openness of the site and its projected density, as well as the greater density present on ASU's other campuses. The Event Space is a sprawling, transparent structure, set among the landscape. The Tower, which houses program such as classrooms, student work spaces, and offices, is much more dense, and is organized in such a way to encourage interaction between students and faculty.
